Poker Hand Rankings – The Strongest and Weakest Hands in Poker

Whether you prefer Texas Hold’em Poker, Pot Limit Omaha, or live poker, all of these game types apply the same hand-ranking rules.

To be a top-notch poker player and win the most money, you need to understand the strength and ranking of your hand. Does a flush beat a straight? What hands can beat a four-of-a-kind?

To answer these questions, Lodi777 will provide this tutorial article. We will explain and list the rankings of the decks from strong to weak.

The Basics of Poker Hand Rankings

What is the point of playing this game? The goal is of course to win the pot and take home the big money. However, to win, you will need to make the best 5 card hand, with the strongest hand being the winner.

The value of strong or weak poker hands is determined by the rarity of the hand. Accordingly, the most popular decks will be the weakest.

Understanding the rankings of poker hands will help you win more easily and avoid wasting money on betting.

Before we get into the rankings of poker hands, here are a few things to note:

  • In poker games like Texas Hold’em, Omaha, Short Deck, the suit of the cards does not matter. For example, a Spade is not stronger than a Diamond.
  • An Ace is considered the highest or lowest card depending on the hand you hold.
  • In the case of a tie, the unpaired side card determines the winning hand.

Order of Poker Hands

Four of a kind (A-A-A-A-J)

Four of a kind are also called “quads”. These hands also follow the ranking of the cards. In order of ranking, an Ace beats a King, a King beats a Queen. Only a straight flush beats a suit, and a suit beats a four-of-a-kind.

Full House / Boat (J-J-J-3-3)

Full house / Boat is a hand of 5 cards consisting of 3 cards of the same kind and a pair. For example, a hand of five cards consisting of 3 cards Jacks and 2  cards threes is a full house. If two or more full houses appear in a round, the player with the highest 3-card hand wins.

In addition to the above decks, there is also a flush deck which is 5 cards of the same suit but not in order. Next is a straight, which is 5 cards in order but not of the same suit. The next 3 smaller decks are Three of a Kind, Two Pairs, One Pair. The last and smallest deck is the High Card, this deck is considered by looking at the 5 cards, which card is the highest to be taken out.
